Health Law Programs

Students have completed a wide range of health-related internships, including working with the Office of the Legal Counsel at the University`s University Medical Center and a number of global companies headquartered in Arizona, including the Critical Path Institute and the International Society for Cardiovascular Translational Research. Working with Professors Spece and Sklar, the students were also members of the hospital`s bioethics committee, co-authored papers, and conducted grant-funded research. Law students also participate in the Interprofessional Education Program (IPIP) and train with graduate students in medicine, public health, nursing, and pharmacy in real-world simulations on topics such as pandemic influenza governance and disability rights. The Health Law and Policy program at American University Washington College of Law is a nationally recognized destination for health law, policy, drug/device and compliance studies in Washington, DC. Our curriculum and curriculum connects health law and political scientists from across the country to policy makers and practitioners in the nation`s capital. Through outreach, training, conferences, professional events, and student counseling, the Health Law and Policy program also ensures that AUWCL students majoring in health law are practical and connected to opportunities. Our students benefit from a depth of course offerings and opportunities in health law that few law schools can offer, including healthcare funding and delivery, healthcare compliance, food and pharmaceutical law, healthcare privacy and data security, fraud and healthcare abuse, medical malpractice, bioethics and regulation of human research, public health law, and global health law. The Health Law and Policy Program also administers the School of Law`s Health Care Compliance Certificate, which is accredited by the Compliance Certification Board (CCB). Through the clerkship program, students interested in health law can earn credits by working for organizations and government agencies that deal with health issues. Typically, students who choose to articling in health law in the spring or fall spend 2 full days per week articling for 4 credits, but students can earn 3 to 11 credits depending on the number of hours they devote to their articling period.

In addition to field experience, internships include a teaching component. Students articling must also register for the Health Law Practice Workshop, which is offered in the fall of each year. The Health Justice Initiative and the Sonke Health and Human Rights Fellowship for LL.M studies enrich UCLA Law as a hub for innovation in health law. Our Philanthropy and Not-for-Profit program develops and shares scholarships and knowledge on issues related to not-for-profit organizations, including tax policy, governance, and the role of nonprofits in advancing health and other social policies. Our Faculty of Health Law advises governments, think tanks, healthcare organizations and individuals around the world and shapes the future of this dynamic and important field. The Clinical Law program offers students the opportunity to focus on representing clients with other legal issues. In collaboration with the hospital`s outpatient AIDS clinic, students advise and represent HIV-infected clients and their families. In collaboration with homelessness programs, students advise and represent homeless clients. Among the legal issues faced by these clients and their student lawyers are obtaining public benefits and combating discrimination in housing, employment and health care. Health law is a specialized area of law that focuses on how the law affects patients and health care providers.

Since 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were introduced, health care reform has evolved to ensure that the most vulnerable people have access to quality health care. Health laws such as HIPPA and ACA have evolved to emphasize patient privacy and access to affordable care. Each of these laws influences business decisions and health law experts are needed to understand the impact and monitor regulatory changes.
